Vappu Jalonen
Distress Run
with Elis Hannikainen, 2019–
Distress Run, a project by artists Elis Hannikainen and Vappu Jalonen, is centred on moving bodies located somewhere between ability and inability. Distress Run is based on the artists' experience of endurance sports, personal writing processes and their exchange.
In Distress Run, the bodies are exposed to norms, able to feel enjoyment, depressed and in need of support. The bodies are entangled in perceptions of health, ability and gender. Endurance sports are also connected to self-monitoring and achieving as well as sisu and nationalism, and our works deal with the difficult experiences related to these.
